Fabric collage are again inspired by fish, such as koi carp swimming up through deep blue water or meadows of daisies on a carpet of green - loosely painted and incorporating monotype prints. Layers of organza or tissue build up the illusion of depth and translucency. Sometimes the collage fabric is incorporated into patchwork quilts.

Using merino fleece to make a felt base to work on, I have developed a method of drawing on to the fabric using a variety of fibres and yarns of silk, bamboo or local wool from the barbed wire down the lane! Translating watercolour sketches of seagulls, chickens and fish into another dimension brings the drawings to life again using an economy of line, exploiting the soft and subtle nature of the delicate fibres to redraw fleeting impressions of the birds.

My trusty Bernina enables me to draw again on fabric in a very different manner and discipline. Here rayon and cotton threads are used to cover cotton with stitch to create a new fabric with texture and vibrant colour in contrast to the more monocrome or neutral toned felt sketches. This is a recently acquired skill and I love the fabulous variety of commercial threads that are available now to the machinist that allows your imagination to run wild. At the moment these are small scale drawings but given time …
