about me and my work

Alison Ciantar - click here to send an email to Alison Having spent a number of years exploring different avenues of artistic endeavour, I have finally returned to my first love - textiles.

Beginning with an Art Foundation year at Middlesex Polytechnic, followed by a journey south to Camberwell School of Art to complete a BA Hons in Ceramics in the early 1980s and an artist-in-residency at a North London senior school, I then went on to spend a number of years exhibiting mixed media collage drawings incorporating monotypes and handpainted fabrics for interiors and accessories in London. However, my journey really started when we transplanted ourselves to Swanage in 2000 and I was given the opportunity of returning to ceramics and spending several years building up a clay studio in Corfe Castle producing animal sculptures and handbuilt vessels to sell locally in Dorset. I also helped set up the Boilerhouse Gallery there.

After attending an inspiring feltmaking workshop with Mary-Clare Buckle in Abbotsbury, I began to use felt to draw on with natural fibres and threads, transferring the sketches I made of seabirds and fish on to natural handmade merino felt.

Now that I have moved to Ashmore, on Cranborne Chase, there are even more birds to choose from and Grace and Tom’s chickens are the new stars in the menagerie.

Along with all this there is always a patchwork quilt on the go or a knitting project for someone. Recently I spent a day with Linda Miller learning machine embroidery, so my 30 year old Bernina has been resurrected after a few years of neglect and I’m exploring totally new techniques for me and re-interpreting my birds, fish and flowers in yet another discipline.

So many birds, with so many faces and so little time ...

If you would like to visit my studio, please contact me by or phone.
